Structured Strongman Training Session Highlights: 18 Jul 2009 - Strongman Push Sled and Powerlifting Club Squats

After the utter and complete wipeouts of the previous Push-Sled Session
(http://teamironbehemoths.blogspot.com/2009/06/structured-strongman-training-session_21.html), the question was how were we going to make it even remotely appealing to the members ever again?

The answer is Mel!

With Mel looking on encouragingly, everyone strangely seemed to have an extra spring in their step.

SuperVan makes it there and back in record time.

The rest of the guys stepped up a gear and put in better timings as well.

Of course, the wipeouts were still there. Duh.

But driven on by our improvement in timing, the only thing that appeals to us is our progress in strength!

However many Push Sled wipeouts we shall meet enroute to our goals,
we shall meet it with a smile on our face!

That view is visibly shared across the board.

We bleed in training so that we will win a bloodless war come competition time.

You can never keep a good man down.

Powerlifting Club - Squats

Strong(Wo)man Spotlight

We've never quite seen a lady squat just as fine.

Under the tutelage of Van, this gung ho lady performs the powerlift as it's meant to be.

Well done Mel!

We'd love to see other ladies follow your example!

Dr Squat: Van assists Mel in proper placement of the bar.

And Van makes Mel go parallel. Or is it the other way around?

Hulk showing the members it's all in the hips and not the knees!

And everyone got their turn to try the newfound form under supervision.

Calling all ladies, if you want to take a page from Mel and start squating for the buns, hips and thighs, feel free to come for our FREE First Timers Trial Session.

Strongman Tyre Flip

Back to basics.

That is what we do.
We are Team Iron Behemoths.
And we are getting even stronger.

Our newest member, Jue Hua, 17, being introduced to tyre flipping. With everyone lending their advice and support.

And he gets it on his own in one session! Flip strong and safe! Well done, mate!

Amazing Angelina is almost there! The Team gives her a slight boost.
Now we got ladies moving 200kg tyres! What's next?

Van nailed Abigail! All 350kg of her!

Powerlifting Club - Deadlifts

Last week saw Damien shatter the record for members. This week saw his record shattered. In fact, PRs were broken all across the board. Business as usual.

Strongm(e)n Spotlight

Now who would like to have a go at the current record of 200kg?

Cue the "Real American" entrance theme...

Van steps up. Eager for more.

PR - and gets a new members record of 220kg. Brilliant!

Here are more PRs from the day -

PR - Ryan hits 12okg. Record for now but watch this space!

PR - Spenser inducted into our "3 Cookie Club" with 140kg.

PR - Zhanwei gets 180kg for the first time

Zhan Wei once wrote into us-

"Previously, I had no idea that there was such a active strength sports scene in Singapore. Till i came down to train with the Behemoths, which introduced me to a whole new type of sport. The team has helped me improve in an astonishing rate. I hit a deadlift PR of 160kg, which i could say to be one of my proudest achievements to date. Proper form is emphasized during lifts, to ensure no injury. The raw competitive, but friendly spirit amongst the members ensures that everyone tries to outdo each other constantly, and constructive advice is heard frequently during sessions. I would like to thank and dedicate this testimonial to the whole team. Lets get stronger together!" Zhan Wei., 17, - 31/05/09

Well, Zhan Wei, you've got another 20kg worth of reasons to feel prouder now!

We are proud of you too!

Structured Strongman Training Session Highlights: 04 Jul 2009 - Strongman Farmer's Walk and Powerlifting Club Deadlifts

Today’s session was another fruitful one. The weather was once again stifling with the sweltering heat threatening to dampen the mood. In spite of the less than conducive weather conditions, our members were able to step up a gear and put in better performances during the session. Those who came beat the weather and busted their PRs. The Strongman Lift today was an old trusty favourite-The Farmer’s Walk.

The youngest Behemoth, Zhan Wei, rose to the occasion and nailed a personal best of 90kg in each hand. Although it was a PR attempt for the 17 year old school sprinter, the fluid manner in which he executed the pass belied its difficulty. Well done Zhan Wei! In the same vein, the veteran Yoshida did several sets of over 100kg rather effortlessly. At the rate our members are progressing, the Behemoths will definitely put on a helluva good show next year!

Powerlifting Club

In the Strongman Spotlight is Damien, a Singaporean who is currently residing in Australia but who is here for a visit. Damian is a medical student and lifts as well. Indeed he exemplifies the concept of having brawn together with brains perfectly. He is here to sample strongman training and he tried his hand at Abigail the tire. In spite of having zilch experience in tire flipping, he managed to nail Abigail-a testament to his raw unadulterated strength!
Deadlifts was next on the card. We introduced him to the hook grip for the first time and left no detail uncovered. Thereafter, Damian provided feedback that it is the most secure grip he ever felt. Not surprisingly, the big man from Down Under attained his previous PR of 210kg (which was performed with straps) using the hook grip. As a matter of fact, this stands as one of the biggest deadlifts by our members and for this achievement, Strongman Spotlight is shining on Damien this week.

A little specialised tip on the grip from our resident Deadlift go-to "guy"(read:Hulk)...

And he nailed the weight without straps for the first time!
