A New Age is upon us.
The Age of The Iron Behemoths.
Team Iron Behemoths is Singapore's first commercial Strongman group. Team Iron Behemoths believes in hard training, dedication, and discipline. We are here to make a statement. The statement that steroids are not necessary, and that it is possible to achieve your physical goals if one is simply willing to pay his dues. Some members of Team Iron Behemoths competed in Singapore's HomeTeam-NS Strongman Challenge 2008. Being first-time competitors, the results were pretty damn impressive. With members all placing in the Top 25 Strongest, including Samuel 'The Hulk' Lim who was the 2nd runner up. Keith Wong "The King" placing 18th at only 20 years of age while Ben Ho, 30, achieved 25th Strongest with only 2 years of training.
Now, that's a STRONG start!

1st Singapore Athletic Association(SAA) Tug Of War Championships
Now for the main event.
The organisers, having saw and being impressed by our indomitable fighting spirit, invited us play the exhibition match against the Hong Kong National Team - in full strength! 8 vs 8.
The Behemoths, now powered by The King and The Hulk, beat the Hong Kong team 2-1. The sheer brute force overcoming experience and technique. We must add, though, that it was no easy victory for us as the Hong Kong team were seasoned vets with tons more experience under their belt than us. It was really an honour and a great learning experience for us to compete against them. Full marks to them for sportsmanship!
they even invited us over to Hong Kong for drinks after the event - which I'm sure we'll be making a trip there soon.
All in all, it was a great outing for all of us - especially our members who really enjoyed themselves competing in sport for the first time in their lives.
We'll be back next year.
You think that's all.
Far from finished, the Behemoths headed down to Kembagang, where we were invited by Jalan Besar Grassroots Committee to help out in their own Tug-Of-War event.
Hence, the Behemoths - together with two 50-plus old ladies, two young teens and a few others - competed again. Along the way, we creamed all the other teams, then it got interesting. We were slated to play Ang Mo Kio GRC, last year's defending champions, which even had the famed thrower James Wong as its anchorman, in the semi-finals. He was a huge figure, almost 2 metres tall and with his team looking like physically well-trained individuals, they did cause us some consternation before the fight.
But this is the Age of the Behemoths and we are officially the strongest in the country! James Wong had been an great icon of strength for Singapore for the past decade or so, but this is a new dawn. And if we couldn't beat him and his team, the sun doesn't look to shine too well for the strength sports scene in Singapore. We gathered ourselves, had a pep talk, snarled when we shook their hands, and were ready to unleash the inevitable.
Victory was ours as we defeated them 2-0. We tugged this giant of a man and his team of ex-champions over the line with sheer grit. It was our honour to compete with them and we would like to thank them for this unbelievable experience. But it took a lot of gas out of our tank. So we made it to the grand finals. This motley crue of us.
And there we met the winners from the official SAA Tug of war competition as our opponents. All of them were surprisingly representing Holland GRC. We won the first pull rather quickly with whatever was left of our raw unbridled Behemoth power. Maybe the rush of adrenaline and having all eyes on us helped. The crowd of thousands including Ministers, the cheering Hong Kong team, the snapping photographers, the press and TV crew spured us on. A huge, deafening cheer from the masses resouded when we tugged their flag unexpectedly over our line! The two senior ladies in our team could not believe it and neither could we beacuse we were well spent.
The other two pulls lasted forever but in the end, the better prepared and more technical team won. Congrats to them!

Jalan Besar GRC came in as this year's 1st Runner-Up.
I wonder if they must still be scracthing their heads, puzzled,
how did they get beaten, all 8 deserving champions,
if only for a round,
by 2 senior citizens and 2 lower secondary students...
...oh wait, there's us Iron Behemoths. :)
Guess what? We are training for next year's too. Watch this space.

Despite her small frame, Shi Qi impressed the Behemoths and the other members by pulling more than twice her bodyweight on the sled - definitely the strongest girl we've seen around!

Getting people Stronger!
Below are some testimonials from our very own members .
"My interest in strongman began when my good friend Lee goaded me into pulling a 3-ton vehicle. To my surprise I managed to do it. From then on I decided I wanted to take part in the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge, and thus sought ways and means to train effectively in order to have a good showing. However, strongman events are somewhat specialised, and I felt that the carryover from gym work to the actual events was rather limited.
It was not until Team Iron Behemoths were formed that specialised equipment became available. Team Iron Behemoths are not just there to simply provide equipment. They are there to teach you the technicalities of the events and to help you improve your strength, speed and stamina with their structured training programs.
Even if you don't wish to take part in the strongman contest, training the events does have great carryover to your gym work. For example, I increased my deadlift from 145kg to 160kg in 6 months without directly training for it. And I did it after a training session!
If you're stuck on a plateau for any of your big lifts, perhaps a package of strongman sessions will help break it!
Going back to the events, their structured training sessions have greatly improved my timings. With their guidance and tough loving, I feel very confident in showing up for the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge and obtaining a good placing.
I would like to thank the entire team as well as the other members, in helping to create a conducive and effective training environmet where we all seek to better ourselves."

No one is too young to get strong
"Before I first came to know about the current phenomenon that is revolutionizing the local strength sports scene, Team Iron Behemoths, through the recommendations of my friend KC, and even throughout the first few weeks of training, I never dreamt of even taking part in the Strongman Challenge.
Now however, everything has changed.
In a short span of about 3 months, I have gone from an average guy with totally no experience in Strongman to flipping the 250kg Stamford Tire used in the actual competition 10 times, the required number for the finals, in 3 min 4s, as well has attaining a 166kg (83kg each side) Suitcase Deadlift Personal Best (PB).
All this after only 12 weeks of training sessions.
To think that before those 4 tire flipping sessions, I couldn't even flip the tyre once on my own!
Now, after having attended only 13 weekly sessions , I am confident of taking part in next year's Strongman Challenge and plan to aim for a spot in the Top 20 contestants.
You would think that is all.
I also attended the 2.5 hour marathon booster pack session specially for beginners who've hit a plateau, in which Sam the Hulk and Keith the King gave me various tips ranging from proper warmup protocol to lifting form to nutrition and most importantly, psyching yourself up and mentally preparing for a record lift. Within the span of 2.5 hours , I attained TWO personal bests, a push press and bench of 70kg even though I had already trained in the morning!
Moreover, all my lifts, including the 10 tyre flips and farmers walk deadlift, came AFTER the session. My 1RM (at the point of time of writing) for deadlift is 140kg( overhand hook grip) while my back squat is 110kg. My bench has also improved to 77.5kg, my press being 55.5kg.
I think all this would not have been possible without the help of co-managers The Hulk and The King. For that I would like to thank the both of them, and of course, the rest of the Team Without all these guys, I would not have made such progress. "
Cheers,
